This might be one of the most interesting videos I’ve seen lately – although it’s from 2011. But basically this TED Talk “The Birth of a Word” starts with the tracking of how a child learns how to talk and goes on to modelling the brain of society as a whole.

MIT researcher Deb Roy wanted to understand how his infant son learned language — so he wired up his house with videocameras to catch every moment (with exceptions) of his son’s life, then parsed 90,000 hours of home video to watch “gaaaa” slowly turn into “water.”

Pretty impressive if you ask me. Not so sure about the privacy implications for Roy’s son once he gets older…
